In Memory of Aditya Wardhana: A Tireless Champion for Access to Medicines

ITPC Global and Make Medicines Affordable (MMA) campaign partners are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Aditya Wardhana, a longstanding leader of the Indonesia AIDS Coalition (IAC) and a committed member of our global movement for affordable medicines.

Aditya dedicated his life to defending the rights of people living with HIV and challenging the inequalities that prevent millions of people from accessing lifesaving treatment. Through his leadership at IAC, a longstanding MMA partner in Indonesia, he helped strengthen community-led advocacy for affordable medicines and health justice.

His commitment to this struggle remained unwavering until the very end. Just weeks before his passing, Aditya contributed expert testimony to Indonesia’s Constitutional Court in a landmark case challenging the weakening of safeguards against pharmaceutical patent evergreening. The Court’s historic decision in August 2026 restored crucial public health protections and reaffirmed the right of communities to challenge unjustified patent monopolies.

This victory stands as part of Aditya’s legacy: a powerful reminder that organized communities can challenge powerful interests and change the laws that determine who gets access to treatment.

“Just weeks ago, Aditya was still standing up for the right to affordable medicines in Indonesia’s Constitutional Court. That was Aditya: always on the front line, always putting communities first. We have lost a dear ally, but his fight lives on.”

Othoman Mellouk, Access to Medicines and Health Technologies Lead, ITPC Global

From advocating for affordable HIV medicines to defending public health safeguards in patent law, Aditya embodied the solidarity, courage and determination at the heart of Make Medicines Affordable. His work demonstrated that access to medicines is not simply a question of prices or patents, but of justice, dignity and the power of communities to shape decisions affecting their lives.

“Aditya embodied the courage and determination of the community-led movement for health justice. His leadership and unwavering commitment to equitable access to treatment leave a lasting legacy, not only in Indonesia but across our global movement. We honour his contribution and stand in solidarity with the communities and colleagues who will carry his work forward.”

Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues at the Indonesia AIDS Coalition and the wider Indonesian HIV community.

Rest in power, Aditya. We will carry your struggle forward.
