• US infectious disease expert and head of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr Anthony Fauci says a coronavirus vaccine could become available before two phase III trials conclude at the end of 2020, based on whether their independent Data and Safety Monitoring Boards see evidence of overwhelming benefits – or risk. • The US NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel releases a statement on the use of convalescent plasma, saying that there is not enough data to recommend for or against its use, and that it should not be considered as standard of care for treating COVID-19; it recommends randomized, controlled clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy.
