• The CDC followed outcomes among nearly 4,000 people who were hospitalized with COVID-19 or the flu. They reported that people with COVID-19 were more than five times more likely to die than people with the flu; in addition, they were at twice the risk for pneumonia and at higher risk for other complications. Black and Hispanic people who were hospitalized with COVID-19 had worse outcomes, with higher rates of neurologic, kidney and respiratory complications. Source
• In London, researchers hope to gain regulatory approval for a coronavirus vaccine ‘challenge trial’, during which they would expose 90 study participants to the virus to identify the dose that will cause infection but not severe illness. Additional volunteers would be vaccinated with different candidates, then exposed to coronavirus to determine their effectiveness. This approach is controversial; although younger people are less likely to become seriously ill, there is no cure for COVID-19, and results from such a study might not be applicable to older people.
