• South Africa’s SAHPRA approves the J & J single-dose coronavirus vaccine. Source

• The US FDA authorizes Moderna to increase the amount of its coronavirus vaccine per vial from 10 to 15 doses, which will increase supply. Source

• The UK reports 25 new cases of rare blood clots among recipients of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, reaching a total of 30, while the Netherlands joined Germany in restricting use of the vaccine in people under age 60 years. Source

• The B.1.1.7 coronavirus variant, which is more transmissible and possibly more deadly than older versions of the virus, has become predominant from New York to Florida, in the Midwest and most of the Sunbelt – home to two-thirds of the US population. Source

• J & J launches a trial of its single-shot coronavirus vaccine in adolescents ages 12-17. Source

• The NIH launches a 210-person phase I trial of a new coronavirus vaccine from Moderna designed to protect people from the B.1.351 variant. It will enroll people ages 18 and older, including people who have already been vaccinated, and is assessing doses of 50, 100 and 250 mcg. Source

• Despite vaccinating a third of its residents, Chile is facing a spike in new coronavirus infections with the B. 1.1.7 and P.1 variants, possibly because measures were relaxed too soon. Hospitals and morgues are filled, and new lockdowns have been imposed to curb the virus. Source
